Eric's Top 5 Home EV Chargers for Australia in 2026

There is no single right answer here. The best charger for you depends on your home setup, whether you have solar, and what you want to spend. Here are the five I recommend most often and who each one suits best.

Prices below are for the unit only and exclude installation. $ = budget / $$ = mid-range / $$$ = premium / $$$$ = top end.

1.

Smappee EV Wall HOME

Best overall smart charger

This is the one I install most often for customers who have solar or want to keep a close eye on what their home is using. Smappee started out as an energy monitoring company, so the smart tech in this charger is properly thought through, not just bolted on.

The charger connects to your home's energy system and watches two things at once: how much solar your panels are producing and how much power everything else in the house is pulling. It uses that information to charge your car at the best possible rate without blowing your circuit or wasting solar you've already generated. You can see all of this in the app in real time, including what each charge session actually cost you.

The unit comes with an 8 metre cable (one of the longest on the market, which helps when the parking spot isn't right next to your switchboard). It was rated number one by Clean Energy Reviews for smart EV chargers in Australia.

The one thing to know upfront: getting the full solar integration requires an additional monitoring device called the Infinity Hub. It adds to the cost but it's what makes the whole system work well together.

Power: 7.4kW (single phase) / 22kW (three phase)

Best for: Homes with solar, anyone who wants to see exactly what their energy is doing

Price: $$$$

Warranty: 2 years standard, extendable to 5 years

2.

Ohme Home Pro

Best for fitting around your electricity rates

Peak electricity in Australia can cost double or triple what off-peak costs, depending on your plan. Most people don't realise how much money they're leaving on the table by just plugging in their EV whenever they get home. If your car is drawing 7kW during the evening peak, that adds up fast over a year of daily charging.

The Ohme has integrated with over 14,000 Australian electricity tariffs, which means it actually knows your plan, knows when your cheap rates kick in, and schedules charging around that automatically. You just plug the car in when you get home, tell the app what time you need it ready by, and it handles the rest. The car will be charged on time, using the cheapest power available overnight.

Solar integration is also included without any extra hardware. So it covers both scenarios: cheap overnight grid power and free daytime solar.

The app is clean, easy to use, and covers everything you need including per-session cost tracking and Tesla state-of-charge integration for Tesla owners. The unit itself is small and neat with a colour LCD screen. Comes as the Home Pro with a tethered cable, or the ePod which is untethered and a bit cheaper.

Power: 7.4kW (single phase only)

Best for: Anyone on a time-of-use electricity tariff, customers who want set-and-forget charging without thinking about it

Price: $$

Warranty: 3 years parts and labour

3.

myenergi Zappi

Best for solar-first charging

The Zappi is probably the most recognised smart solar charger in Australia. It's been around longer than most and has a loyal following for good reason. Where the Ohme is smart about your electricity tariff, the Zappi is smart about your solar.

It has three modes you can switch between depending on what you want. Fast mode draws from the grid at full speed, which is what a basic charger does. ECO mode prioritises your solar but will pull a small amount from the grid to keep charging going if the sun drops. ECO+ mode is solar only, full stop. If there's not enough solar coming in, the car just waits. For people who want to charge their car entirely from their own roof this might be the one for you.

The app covers scheduling and monitoring. Dynamic load management is included, meaning it will automatically reduce charging if something else in the house is pushing the circuit close to its limit.

One thing worth knowing: the Zappi has a maximum operating temperature of 40 degrees. For most of Sydney that's fine, but if you're further west or in a particularly hot spot, it's something to consider.

Power: 7.4kW (single phase) / 22kW (three phase)

Best for: Solar households, especially anyone who wants solar-only charging as an option

Price: $$$

Warranty: 3 years

4.

Ocular IQ Home Solar

Best Aussie brand option

Ocular is an Australian company and their IQ Home Solar is a solid charger for homes with solar panels. Like the Zappi, it uses CT clamps to monitor how much surplus solar your system is producing, and it has three charging modes: Fast, Solar Assist, and Solar Only.

The thing that sets Ocular apart from everything else on this list is the screen. Most chargers either have a few small LED lights or no display at all, so you rely on the app for any information. The Ocular has a proper LCD screen on the unit itself showing you charging speed, time, voltage, and temperature at a glance. If you'd rather just look at the wall than pull your phone out, this is the one.

The warranty is two years which is on the shorter side. You can pay to extend it. There have been some user reports about the scheduling feature through the app being patchy on older firmware, so worth confirming that's been sorted on the current version if scheduling overnight charging is important to you.

Power: 7.2kW (single phase) / 22kW (three phase)

Best for: Australian brand preference, anyone who wants real-time info on the charger screen rather than through an app

Price: $$

Warranty: 2 years standard, extendable to 5 years

5.

Tesla Wall Connector Gen 3

For Tesla owners, but work out the real cost first

If you drive a Tesla, this will probably be the first charger you look at. It integrates directly with the Tesla app, looks great on the wall, and the 4 year warranty is the longest of anything on this list. As a straight charging device it does the job well.

The issue comes when you want solar integration, which most people do. The Tesla Wall Connector does not have solar integration built in. To get your charger talking to your solar system, you need to sign up for a third party app called Charge HQ, which runs on a monthly subscription. That's an extra ongoing cost on top of the unit, on top of installation, that the other chargers on this list do not have. So what looks like one of the cheaper options on the shelf can end up costing more once you factor in years of subscription fees.

If you drive a Tesla and solar integration genuinely doesn't matter to you, it's a decent charger. But for most people who are buying a home charger specifically to make use of their solar panels, one of the other four options will do more, cost less over time, and not leave you depending on a subscription service to unlock a basic feature.

Power: 7.4kW (single phase) / 22kW (three phase)

Best for: Tesla owners who don't need solar integration

Price: $ for the unit, but add ongoing Charge HQ subscription costs if you want solar integration

Warranty: 4 years

Quick summary: For solar homes, Smappee is our top pick. If you want to automatically charge at the cheapest rate on your electricity plan, go Ohme. For solar-only charging, Zappi. For an Aussie brand with a screen on the unit, Ocular. And if you drive a Tesla and don't need solar integration, the Wall Connector does the job. Not sure what suits your setup?
