What is a switchboard, and why does it matter?

Your switchboard is the nerve centre of your home's electrics. It distributes power to every circuit, and houses the safety switches and breakers that protect your home from faults and fire.

Older boards use ceramic fuses. They don't trip like modern breakers, they fail silently, and they weren't built for what today's homes ask of them: EV chargers, reverse-cycle air con, induction cooktops, home offices.

This isn't just inconvenient. It's a compliance and safety issue, and in many cases, insurance won't pay out for a fire traced back to an old fuse board.

7 signs your switchboard is ready to be renewed

You don't need to be an electrician to spot these. If any of these sound familiar, it's worth having us take a look.

01

You still have ceramic fuses

Round, screw-in fuses instead of plastic breakers means your board is at least 30-40 years old. Ceramic fuses don't trip, they burn through, offering almost no protection when something goes wrong.

02

Breakers trip regularly

Occasional trips are normal. Frequent trips under normal loads usually means your board is undersized, or a breaker is failing.

03

No safety switches (RCDs)

Safety switches cut power in milliseconds if they detect a fault to earth. Australian standards require them on all power and lighting circuits. If yours doesn't have them, you're not protected.

04

Lights flicker or dim

Can point to a loose connection, an overloaded circuit, or a failing neutral in the board itself. None of these should be ignored.

05

A burning smell near the board

Any burning smell, discolouration or scorch marks near your switchboard is a red flag. Switch off and call us. Don't wait on this one.

06

You're adding high-draw appliances

Adding an EV charger, induction cooktop, or ducted air con? Your existing board may not have the headroom. Worth checking before you install anything new.

What a switchboard upgrade involves

Every upgrade starts with an honest conversation — no upselling, no scare tactics. Here's what we typically do.

  • Full assessment of your existing board, circuits and load

  • Removal of old fuse boards, safely isolated during changeover

  • New consumer mains board, correctly rated for your home

  • Safety switch (RCD) protection on all circuits, not just the minimum required

  • Single and 3-phase upgrades for homes, offices, workshops and strata

  • Capacity upgrades if you're adding an EV charger, solar, or major appliance

  • Labelling and a Certificate of Compliance for your records

  • Full clean-up, every time. That's our guarantee.
